Literary Elements at work in the story: This is a limited biography of an event in the life of Alia Mohammad Baker. She dreams of peace in her country and a new library being built. Alia, along with friends, then has to move all of them, 30,000 books!, to her own home to keep them safe as the war rages on. Nine days after Basra is invaded the library is burnt to the ground. ![]() She took a great personal risk because she was told by her government to leave the books alone. Baker, with the help of friends and neighbors, was able to save seventy percent of the library’s books by hiding them in her own home and in a neighbor’s business. The invasion of Iraq by the Allied forces reached Basra on April 6, 2003.
